Hand Knotted Afghan Chobi Kilim | 120 x 80cm

These durable, hand knotted rugs feature natural, earthy colours and traditional geometric patterns. Handmade in Afghanistan, each rug is slightly different. Please note these images are examples of the various designs we have available in store. For online orders, we cannot guarantee which design you will receive.

The Chobi Kilim is a meticulously handcrafted Afghan rug, rich with the history of the Silk Road. Made by Turkmen and Uzbek artisans in villages across Northern Afghanistan, including Aqcha, Maimana, Shibirghan, Qundooz, and Herat, these rugs are the main source of income for the weavers.

The striking patterns and colours woven into each rug are inspired by the weavers' surroundings and ancient textiles.

Handmade Process & Materials
The creation of a Chobi Kilim is a time-intensive process that involves many handmade steps. An experienced artisan, working 5-6 hours a day, can complete a 150x100cm size rug in 2 to 3 months.

Materials: The rugs are woven using 100% hand-spun, natural fibres. The primary materials are Ghazni wool and cotton.

Dyeing: The wool and cotton are dyed using unique dyeing techniques. Plant-based natural dyes are used, including materials like pomegranate, orange, and leaves.

Weaving Technique: The rugs feature techniques of both kilim (flat weave) and pile weaving.

Post-Dyeing: Once freshly dyed, the wool is weighed and then hung on a rack to dry.
