This Kōkopu Brooch is handmade by Emma Cunningham. This little wearable work of art is made from vintage silver-plated silverware which is then deconstructed, beaten, and rivoted. Each piece is handmade and no two are the same.
Kōkopu is a common name used for several species of ray-finned fish of the genus Galaxias. Kōkopu, a group of native New Zealand freshwater fish, hold significant symbolic, cultural and ecological value. Often referred to in the context of whitebait (the juvenile stage of several species), they represent a vital food resource and are considered a taonga/ treasure species.
