More and more I have been noticing coffee isn't working so well for me and during lockdown I came up with this replacement. It's bitter, delicious and has a subtle 'kick'. 

What is raw cacao powder?

Raw cacao is a less processed form of cocoa powder. The beans are dried at a low temperature before being ground. With less processing the cacao powder is higher in minerals and antioxidants and it also has a richer, deeper chocolatey flavour.  However, as this drink uses boiling water the cacao will no longer be considered raw.

Makes 1 large mug | Equipment needed: blender

  • 2 Tbsp cacao powder
  • ⅛ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 1/2 cup coconut or other milk
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Optional:  

  • 1 Tbsp coconut sugar or maple syrup if you like a sweeter drink
  • 1 Tbsp of Collagen powder and/or medicinal mushrooms like Reishi 

Method

Place the cacao, boiling water, spices and coconut sugar into a blender or Magic Bullet.  Give it a whizz to blend the ingredients. Then add your chosen milk. Blend for a further 1 minute. If you prefer a super hot drink you may consider warming the milk before adding. I'm usually in too much of a hurry!

Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy.
